Jackie Cherryhomes to Speak at Augsburg Seminar
Minneapolis City Council president Jackie Cherryhomes and St. Paul School Board chair Dr. Mary Thornton Phillips will be the featured speakers in a public seminar titled "Women in the City: Perspectives on Leadership," to be held March 21 at Augsburg College.
The seminar, which will run from 8 a.m.-1:15 p.m., is the 12th annual Spring Seminar sponsored by the Augsburg College Associates. Cost is $22, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. The seminar will be held in the Hoversten Chapel, located in the Foss Center (corner of 22nd and Riverside avenues South).
Cherryhomes graduated cum laude from Augsburg in 1976 in English and political science. She has been involved in numerous community projects that deal with establishing affordable housing and creating a safe urban area. She has continued this work in her role as president of the Minneapolis City Council by supporting policies that strengthen community crime prevention and SAFE programs, promote neighborhoods, create jobs for residents, and many other issues on urban concerns.
Phillips holds degrees from the University of Minnesota, Indiana University and Xavier University in New Orleans. She has been a teacher, principal, an assistant commissioner for vocations-technical education in the Minnesota Department of Education and a vice-chancellor for instruction for the Minnesota Community System. She has also served in more than a dozen community organizations and has received honors and awards from various institutions, including the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. She devotes much of her attention to education and women's issues.
The Augsburg College Associates is a service auxiliary of volunteers whose mission includes fund raising for special projects in support of the College.
