First-year Augsburg College students start college by serving others

Before setting foot in their first college class, nearly 350 Augsburg College first-year students will spend Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 4 p.m. volunteering at 16 Twin Cities service organizations and schools. Augsburg classes start Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the students will perform a wide variety of volunteer activities ranging from working on a construction site at a Habitat for Humanity house to painting the lobby at the Heart of the Beast Theatre (a complete list is attached).
It will be the ninth year in a row that Augsburg first-year students will start their college careers by serving others. Augsburg's First Year Experience-City Service Projects program is run jointly by the academic and student life divisions of the college and includes, in addition to community service, related seminars and reading for the students.
Students work in groups of 15-20 and are led by student orientation leaders and faculty advisors. They will walk or bus to their service destinations from the Augsburg campus.
The First Year Experience program is just one of many community partnerships that Augsburg has established. Throughout their college careers, Augsburg students get an opportunity to live up to the college's motto, "Education for Service," through experiential education. This program includes internships, community service-learning and cooperative education. In all, over 900 Augsburg students annually participate in service-learning activities.
Most events will take place between 2 and 4 p.m. (exceptions noted)
