In October 1998, Judy and Dennis Shepard lost their 21-year-old son, Matthew, to a murder inspired by anti-gay hate. Determined to prevent their son's fate from happening to others, they established the Matthew Shepard Foundation to help carry on Matthew's legacy by embracing the just causes he had championed. Determined to use her grief over her son's death to make a difference, Judy has made the prevention of hate crimes the focus of her efforts. She now speaks to audiences nationwide about what they can do to make their schools and communities safer for everyone, regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
