The Augsburg College Theatre Arts Department presents Machinal
In the 1928 Expressionist play Machinal, playwright Sophie Treadwell explores the life of a young woman, following her struggles with a monotonous occupation, an oppressive marriage, an overwhelming motherhood, and an overall entrapment she feels within these structures. Confined by powerful social expectations, the young woman eventually seeks escape by means of extreme actions. Through the perspective of a female protagonist, Machinal is a potent stylistic play that investigates the submissive and inescapable role of women in the 1920s as they struggle against worn-out Victorian values.
Performances are April 2, 3,15, 16, and 17 at 7 p.m. and April 4 and 18 at 2 p.m.
