Colman McCarthy To Speak Jan. 22 at Augsburg College
Colman McCarthy, long-time syndicated columnist, editorial writer for The Washington Post, and founder and current Director of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Teaching Peace, will speak Thursday, Jan. 22, at Augsburg College.
McCarthy, one of the nation's leading advocates for peace initiatives, will speak on the subject "Nonviolence in a Time of War." His talk, scheduled for 7 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel, will be open to the public at no charge.
Called "A man of profound spiritual awareness" by Smithsonian Magazine, McCarthy is a frequent speaker at conferences, peace gatherings, and at colleges and universities across the United States. He also has appeared on a regular basis on such national media programs as Crossfire, The Today Show, and Weekend Edition on National Public Radio. In addition, he serves as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center.
Followers
of his writing cherish McCarthy’s work for the passion
of his convictions and his idealism. He believes each of us can be a
peacemaker in our own personal and political lives. "He’ll
make you think about and believe in the alternatives to violence," noted
Harry Sayen of the Trenton (N.J.) Times. "He has become a peacemaker
who puts his ideas into practice by teaching and speaking."
In addition to his public talk, McCarthy will also speak in two Augsburg classes during the afternoon. His appearance is being sponsored by the Augsburg Student Activities Committee, The Lilly Endowment on Vocation, the Coalition for Student Activism, the Center for Service, Work & Learning, and the Office of Public Relations & Communication.
