Augsburg College Campus Kitchen receives national award
The Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College (CKAC) has been honored with one of nine Harry Chapin Self-Reliance awards given by World Hunger Year (WHY), an organization devoted to finding grassroots level solutions to hunger and poverty.
CKAC was one of 300 applicants for the award intended to recognize “outstanding grassroots organizations in the U.S. that have moved beyond charity to creating change in their communities.” The $2,500 award will be used to support CKAC’s work in the Minneapolis community.
CKAC is a partnership between The Campus Kitchens Project, Augsburg College, and local community agencies as a hunger-relief organization that uses food donations from campus dining operations, student organizations, and Second Harvest Heartland in the preparation of meals that are delivered to community service agencies. The Campus Kitchen at Augsburg has served over 10,000 meals and involved over 300 volunteers to date, serving the community members surrounding the college, including immigrants, low-income families, homeless adults, and elders.
Other projects carried out by CKAC include nutrition education, youth cooking classes, an adopt-a-family project, and a culinary job-training program. The many Augsburg students involved with the program learn about neighborhood issues while applying classroom skills in real-life situations.
