Michael Steinberg, concert program annotator, to lead class on Beethoven String Quartets
Michael
Steinberg, considered to be one of the best concert program annotators in
the world and is a well-respected author of books and articles on classical
music, will be lead a class at 8am on April 14 in Lindell Library 16 on
the Beethoven String Quartets as part of a music history class taught by
Dr. Merilee Klemp and Richard Evidon (visiting lecturer and also one of
the principal editors of the voluminous and definitive Grove Dictionary
of Music).
Michael Steinberg, musicologist, writer, lecturer, critic, teacher, chamber
music coach, and narrator, retired from his positions as program annotator
of the San Francisco Symphony and the New York Philharmonic at the end of
the 1999-2000 season. Previously he had served the Boston Symphony in the
same capacity. He was the San Francisco Symphony's Artistic Adviser for
ten years and later held the same post with the Minnesota Orchestra, where
he was also Artistic Director of the annual Viennese Sommerfest. He has
also been part-time program annotator with the Saint Louis Symphony and
the Minnesota Orchestra, and he has provided notes for the Metropolitan
and New York City operas, the Edinburgh and Adelaide festivals, and the
London Proms. In addition, he has written liner notes for most major classical
record labels, including Angel-EMI, BMG, Decca-London, Deutsche Grammophon,
and Nonesuch.
