Kennedy Center is open for business
The south-wing addition to Si Melby Hall opened earlier this week, with Health and Physical Education staff and Augsburg Athletics coaches moving into new offices in the addition, and wrestling practices taking place in the new training facility on the main floor.
The three-story Kennedy Center features the new wrestling training facility, increased classroom space, expanded locker-room facilities and expanded fitness facilities, as well as hospitality, meeting-room and office space. Work is continuing on the lower-level fitness and locker room areas, but the remainder of the facility is now open.
For the project, the college received a $2 million gift from Fridley natives Dean Kennedy '75, and his wife Terry, and a $1 million gift from National Wrestling Hall of Fame member and Minnesota native Alan Rice (in memory of his wife Gloria), along with many other gifts from Augsburg supporters.
The project is the latest in several major improvements on campus. Adjacent to the Kennedy Center is the new air-supported dome over Edor Nelson Field, installed for the first time this year. The new Sprinturf surface on the field was installed in 2004.
