Angela Brand receives first Richard J. Thoni Award
The Richard J. Thoni Award was given this year to social work major Angela Brand for exemplifying a passion and commitment to public service.
This annual award, which was given for the first time this year during the commencement ceremony held June 24, goes to a graduating senior from the Weekend College program whose actions, commitments, and future aspirations most profoundly demonstrate a commitment to Augsburg's motto of "Education for Service."
Among Brand's many accolades, she received recognition for completing 240 hours of public service at Chisago County Social Services, working with programs to help youth transition to adults.
The Richard J. Thoni Award was created upon Thoni's recent retirement to recognize his long-time service to the college and students. Since coming to Augsburg in 1972, Thoni's roles and responsibilities have evolved, including: part-time psychology professor; counselor in the Office of Student Affairs; associate dean of students; acting vice president of Student Affairs; vice president for Research and Development; vice president for Enrollment Management; director of the Weekend College program; and most recently, director of the Rochester Program. Thoni was part of a committed group of individuals who founded Weekend College in 1982.
Faculty and staff who work with the Weekend College program nominate the recipient of the award. A committee appointed by the President reviews the nominations to determine the winner.
